“They” like to say that email marketing doesn't work, but that’s because they are doing it wrong 😉
Marketers like to try to scare people into joining their lists by saying that email marketing is dead – and then using email marketing to successfully sell to those very leads!
Email has always worked and will always work as long as you follow the Winning Email Mantra:
The purpose of the Subject is to get the Open
The purpose of the Body is to get the Click
The First Sentence and PS CTA get the most clicks
So HOW do you get the Open and the Click? This is where most businesses, even corporations!, are doing it dead wrong…
The purpose of the Subject is to get the Open
Emails are electronic letters. If you write like you are writing to a friend, you get the most opens.
Therefore your Subject should be 1-4 words and just get them to open. Like, ‘hey there,’ ‘need help,’ fyi.’
The purpose of the Body is to get the Click
If you tell them everything they need to know in the body, they are not going to click to go to the page.
Keep it short, sweet and intriguing. Open a loop in their mind so that that HAVE to click to know how it will turn out (like a cliffhanger!) Like, ‘Email has always worked and will always work as long as you follow the Winning Email M_____!”
The First Sentence and PS CTA get the most clicks
The easier you make it for people to engage with you, the more they will engage. So make SURE you are putting the most clicked links right under their thumb to click!
Most people are skimmers, they skim it all and click the CTA OR they skim, get distracted and come back later to click the link and if you put it in the first sentence, you made it easy to click. (Yes, I’ve tested and it’s a 10-20% bump in clickthrus)
ALWAYS put a hyperlink in the first sentence and in the PS CTA (and YES you must always have a CTA to make it easy for them to find your help.
Putting your links where they always can find them trains your Tribe that you make things easy for them and that they know exactly where to go to find help 🙂
Advanced Super Star Tip!
Always have a minimum of 3 and max of 5 hyperlinks.
I have no idea why, but the numbers show over and over that 3 links always gets the highest click thru rates and any less gets less.
I know exactly why any more that 5 links tanks – a confused mind doesn’t engage. If you do more than 5 links, you’ve asked them to do too many things, they gotten confused and the easiest path at that point is to do nothing.
Remember, in this time of over-saturation of everything, your Tribe takes the easiest path – so make it EASY for them 🙂
